Best Dressed Met Ball Edition: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination Costume Institute Gala
When it comes to the best and biggest moments in celebrity fashion we have the Oscars, the Cannes Film Festival, and of course the Met Gala. All three are very unique in their own right, and last night in NYC the Met Ball proved why it is in a league all of its own.
This year’s theme was all about Catholic Imagination, and how religion has influenced fashion over the years. Now usually we will see a couple of the same amazing ladies sticking very much with the theme, while everyone else kinda goes in different directions. We can always count on Sarah Jessica Parker, Blake Lively, and Rihanna to swoop in and give us a major style moment. But this year there seemed to be much more effort put into dressing for the theme. In fact, this might be the most I have seen everyone really get into their looks in a long time. There were trains, crosses, and headdresses galore. Katy Perry even showed up as a Versace angel, complete with huge golden wings. Co-chairs Amal Clooney (in Richard Quinn) and Rihanna (in Maison Margiela) both made my mouth drop, but it was my forever reliable and stunning Blake Lively that really stole the show. Blake has a way of wearing clothes that makes you stop whatever it is you are doing and really take her in. Her custom Versace gown took over 600 hours to create, the extravagant piece featured a jewel-encrusted corset, a dramatic embroidered train, and gold sheer panels. To top off the already mind-blowing look, when Lively turned around we got a glimpse of an elaborate gold burst headpiece.
While making my list of top favorites I did keep in mind how important I believe sticking to the theme truly is, but some of these ladies looked so amazing I had to give them passes. Because sometimes even when you aren’t on theme at the Met Gala, you still look both memorable and incredible.
